A rank 6 I was playing in a 3v3 with recently brought up to me the fact that the skill gap between "pro" games and average joe games is so high that it is really hard for a low rank to play with the higher ranks. what do you think?
roleplay = 1/10 player skill average
scenario = 5/10 player skill average
WW1/WW2 = 7/10 player skill average
3v3/clanwar = 9/10 player skill average

The lower ranks could ask for 5-8 or 4-7 ranked 3v3's

Playing with high ranks is the only way to get better. Sure you can throw a bunch of low ranks into a 3v3, but why have them reinvent the wheel?

Since these low ranks dont even get a chance showing what they can during the game. Most of the ''high ranks'' just PD Fagg all the way out and Rush...

Please define skill. What are the elements of skill? What defines a skillful player?

(Not rhetoric questions; just would like to know what the elements of AW skills look like.)

In this context I took it as the money management/ability to predict, as well as the opening as i've seen other players go "wow! how can you get that much first turn with ukraine?"

Getting closer to what we might understand as skills. So it has several elements:
  • Picking the right strategy (one of a series of strategies that enables an optimization of the countries settings, like reinforcements, income and geography, as well as the expected income and reinforcements from expanded territories)
  • Acquiring the right units at the right places in the right moment
  • Moving the right units, in right order, from the right places and to the right destinies
  • Managing finances (related to unit production in previous turns and the expansions made)
  • Movement optimization (maximizing range)

What else? How to develop these elements of skills? How to teach them, in an academy, for instance? How to motivate players to develop these skills? Are they relevant to have fun in AW or is it just an issue to a selected set of players? Why to care, after all?

Walling and turnblocking come in useful. So there is the "skill" in walling, there are many ways to wall instead of just protecting cities, for example you could wall someone else's cities, if you know where they are going to attack you could make a wall between where their units are going and their homeland for example (if you are poland and he is germany and we know how germanies expand, we could make a line of inf from north poland to west austria so the units are delayed 1 turn to get back to germany. You could also wall cities you predict he is going to attack.

- intelligence in gameplay
- economisation and efficiency
- correct use of strat in relation to your country pick, and correct response in gameplay in accordance to theirs.
- observation(paying attention to the other players' troop movements and responding appropriately in agression or defense or even expansion)
- move prioritisation
- risk assessment(am i losing, are bigger risks needed to keep me in the game? are they losing, what options are available to them to overcome me?)
- resourcefulness (range skills etc)
- creativity

Most 3 v 3 players suck so hard in ww2.

And the casual 3 v 3 player can't beat a pro ww2 player.

Skill = the ability to adapt to any situation and win

being good at expanding as ukraine or something =/= skill, that is just memorization

A skilled player will join any game on atwar, scan the units, pick the best strategy, see the strategic locations on the map, understand EXACTLY the mechanics of atwar's combat system and movement system, can use walling to maximum advantage, is a persistant player (does not give up if he encounters a setback), and does not lose focus even in long games.

Ideally, the best way to test skill would be a random map generator but that is just my dream

But u are right about random generated maps :3

Same, I really begin to tire around turn 40 and maybe even go down psychologically if I have two fronts (I'm speaking Germany WW2)

In my experience, I seem to regain concentration and a fresh motivation at around turn 50, provided I haven't given up or died. Not giving up is key

oops, now allies know one of my little secrets

If allies can't win in any front by turn 20, axis win.

Allies can't win in any front - utopia

they will inevitably win somewhere, or at least stalemate. And time is against the axis, I think we know that.

How long has it been since you played a WW2?

Its all about strategy and teammates, WW2 games can be won by allies if played properly. Certain starts need certain strategies, for example, a RA Joseph Stalin would definitely lose.

Eh? Map type doesn't really denote skill, just because you know one map/scenario doesn't mean you can apply it to every game you play on af.

I play lots of 3v3 Europe and 1v1s, these help you get better significantly. Also playing with high ranks, makes you far more skillful.

There are some basic skills you must know, and those can be applied to pretty much ALL games ALL maps. As I said about 1v1s, and 3v3/CW help you develop those skills and increase your knowledge of the game.
