Prehistoric Woolly Mammoths About to Be Resurrected, Claim Harvard Scientists

They are not opening "Jurassic Park" just yet, but scientists are getting closer to bringing back one of the iconic animals of Earth's history. A team from Harvard University announced that it's just two years away from potentially creating a mammoth-elephant hybrid embryo. This step could lead to the eventual resurrection of the woolly mammoth, an animal that's not been around for at least 4,000 years.

Interesting though it sounds unlikely.

Best part of article: Mammoths reduce global warming by punching holes in the ice, allowing cool air to reach the tundra. [clearly article written by AW forum trolls].
But seriously, this would be cool. Wonder how long before the "McMammoth" becomes everyone's fav burger.

i learned in agricultural school, in a village near the school i used to study there was a guy who managed to create combination between deer and another animel (i don't remember wich), and it had lot of meat with amazing taste and low maintence cost at the same time, after couple of years he stoped breeding them because the argiculture ministry stoped funding his project due the vegan movment.

There's been a lot of significant advances in genetic engineering however there have been 2 major factors blocking it or at least slowing it down a bit from advancing.
1. Religion: Religious people.. pretty much just christians have stated we are playing god and thats it not okay and all that shit.
2. Humane: How far are scientists willing to take these experiments.. a lot of consider it okay for them to do this shit cause theyre animals and whatever but where do you draw the line... that whole thing in Jurassic park where not only did they bring back dinosaurs but they made their own which fucked them over basically. It's also a question when does the experiments on us start.

Edit: Since some of you are idiots........Just know this has nothing to do with my opinion and is just me stating what are the conflicting factors in genetic engineering progress.

Nothing........... its got nothing to do with my opinion. Those are just the 2 conflicting issues that are stopping progress in genetic engineering.

What is stated above is more or less accurate... but it is propaganda, and not the underlying reason.

Biochemists and geneticists are required to consider these issues, and it gives credibility to the perception that this is an actual consideration. However it is not religion nor morality. There are no grass-roots organizations that wanted to block the advancement of health and the curing of disease.

It is finance.

Genetic techniques 20 years ago (or more) could cure cancers, every known congenital disorder, and nearly every disease with a genetic basis. But if this happened, all the health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, perhaps 99% of healthcare professionals, and all the spin-off jobs, would be out of business (such as drug testing, blood analysis, etc.)

These trillion dollar industries needed a way to stop this, so they pumped up the religion and moral debates, gave them a platform, hired professional speakers and lawyers to make the presentations, provide air time, press time, etc. to ensure that there was at least some perception that this was a legitimate reason to block the progress, on the basis of 'religious and moral' considerations.

I ask you this... do you actually know a single individual, no matter how orthadox, conservative or extreme in their religious views, who would inflict cancer on 40% (and rising) on the population on a religious basis? Or all the other diseases that have a genetic basis?

It is this question that was a major step in uncovering the truth. You have to base it on your experience. I still have not met anyone in person who actually 'believes' the arguments given by these professional presenters. They are reasonable arguments... and most people respect the religious 'crowd' and think, well they have their beliefs.

But it not the those who worship god that are preventing the advancement...

It is those who worship money.

Interesting, and in my opinion, very probable: that would totally fit with my views on capitalism. But ... any source on that systemic obstruction? Where did you read / learned about it?

Thanks

Personal experience. (i know probably not the answer you want ♥) Keep in mind, if you're the CEO of an insurance company or major pharmaceutical, there's really only a dozen people in the entire industry that need to know, all of whom have a vested interest in keeping it under wraps, and it won't be lying around in any public policy documents. The weak link is the 'professional' speakers, and these are vetted carefully. An oversimplification of their contract is "So, you're an expert on 'theology' or 'morality' with impeccable credentials ... we'll write you a blank cheque to speak publicly about the evils of manipulating genetics. Honour it to your grave, and your family will want for nothing. Break it, and we destroy everything you care about."

There are some people who have come out with respect to suppression of technology in the auto sector, oil and banking. However i don't know of any in the genetics field - apparently their speakers are more loyal =D

But all the sources in the world don't really matter, since the source itself could be deceiving. It's better to base it on personal experience - and for me that just meant questioning and testing the premise with real people who might hold these views. The logic in the argument isn't flawed, which is why it sounds good. It's just that it doesn't check out when you start asking people who you would expect to hold these views, and realizing they consistently don't actually hold them.

In fact, occasionally we hear of Jehovah's Witnesses or other groups that do hold these views in a genuine, authentic way (though they don't forcibly impose them on others) and they are imprisoned or their children removed from their care when they refuse medical treatment (such as immunizations, etc.) These incidents are in such stark contrast to the 'moral and religious' arguments that it is possible to catch a glimpse of the inconsistencies in the 'system'.
