Russia have a hidden factor and that's industrial production spam. Russia is known for bad maybe worst economy but best military economy. For example, if Russian-Turkish War start again, we will start producing MiG-29 and Su-27, they are old, and we will remove alot of parts to make it even cheaper. The only goal is that they need to deliver rockets, nothing more, so in large numbers that is possible although there would be dead pilots. Strong radar, quality materials, long testing not required, so plane will cost $5 million instead $20 million.

Turkey, although have military industrial capabilities, cannot produce fast for the duration of war (few months). Purchasing equipment is also out of question because it is expensive (US and EU are known for expensive weaponry and they can exploit turkish situation to raise the cost).

Turkey have 500,000 active troops, that's one generation, plus reserve (500,000 x 30) 15 million. Russia have 30 million able overall, but only 20 million are listed as reserve, so not big difference. Turkish planes, tanks and rifles are similar technological level as Russian, so that's on-par, no advantage. But because of Russian ability to spam military equipment, it will defeat Turkey on the long run. With heavy casualties on both sides.

First goes the fighter jets to take out Turkish jets, then reserve planes escort bombers to destroy turkish bases, airports and industry, But of course before that tactical missiles destroy turkish ports and navy. That will give Russia superiority and total control of the Black Sea and Turkish airspace, but you still have 15 million infantry. So in order to defeat you, we have to occupy Georgia, go through allied Armenia to attack you, or invade from Crimea, via sea, lets say Sinop or Trabzon. But we lack shipyards, we can't spam ships and boats in quantities like we can spam planes, so we can invade from the sea with limited troops, maybe 5,000 max, of course with escort and protection, or 20,000 without protection, but that's stupid. They can't grab land when there are 15 million enemies, so heavy bombing have to do the work.
Missile attack and bombing of Turkey would last few days, but land invasion would take few months, maybe a whole year. But point is, it will always be 'Russian turn', Turkey can only defend.

But of course Russia and Turkey are different leagues, not fair fight, Russia is a superpower while Turkey is regional power, Russian league is America and China. Turkish league is Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Japan, South Korea.

On the topic of the assassination, this will do nothing short. Even if this did escalate into conflict, it would make no rational sense. Russia is a regional power that hides behind its nuclear capability.

Now let's say in a world where Russia escalated this into conflict, it would be a slow and painful fall for Moscow. First, Turkey holds Russia hostage with the Bosphorus bridge, a trade center which Southern Russia uses to trade with the world. Not to mention that Turkey is a NATO member, meaning that passage through the Black Sea, much less the Baltics, would be unreliable and also held hostage. Keep in mind that Russia may have resources and an industrial base, but lacks an efficient method of transportation of raw resources and more importantly agriculture through the hostile Siberia.

In short, there is no point of escalating this incident into conflict as it does not yield much benefits, nor would it be a Russian victory. With this, it is much better for Putin to remain warm with Erdogan in hopes of a more stable trade partner than western Europe.

I admit it was stupid to INSTALL communist parties in Eastern Europe by USSR, because people had to do that, not foreign army. That way it is communist revolution, not regime change. It was also stupid to force them use same system as Soviet, because copy-paste doesn't work.

Russians were eager sort to say, enthusiasts, full of energy, led by idealistic students, and sometimes by overworked factory workers (work hours not regulated in that time, industrialization was new, West had child labor, that's how messed up industrialzation was). But energy was lost in WW1 and civil war, then again in WW2, then finally the Russian spirit and back is broken in the 90's when USSR died and predatory capitalism arrived. It stole everything from people; pensions, wages, means of production, healthcare, education, infrastructure.

Now Russians are unwilling to create revolutions again or some meaningful protest like 100 years ago. Today it is different. Kind of same like Germans and Japanese, peaceful little people who only wants privacy and enough money to have happy life. That's why i believe 19th century politics and economy would work. Well, 19th century economics and 20th century politics, women have right to vote, so not 19th cent.
