Turkish Coup Attempt Fails

As you all know, rogue elements of Turkey's military staged a coup last Friday night. Tanks rolled into the city streets of Ankara and Istanbul, helicopters opened fire on the Parliament building, soldiers blocked the Bosphorus Bridge and seized control of the main news station proclaiming the armed forces had taken control of the country. Erdogan was forced to make a statement from his phone over facetime urging his supporters to take to the streets.

Within hours, he had landed in Istanbul as growing protest erupted against the coup forces. The regular military began to organize while the coup force s began surrendering in the hundreds. Law enforcement began arresting officers across the country. By the next morning, hundreds were dead and thousands were wounded. 8 officers involved in the coup landed in Greece and are requesting political asylum.Erdogan is demanding the US extradites Gulen.

At the same time he has called for the "cleansing" of those involved: thousands of judges and prosecutors have been arrested or relieved of their command.

So are you happy that Erdogan, a man with the support of half the populace, was able to help preserve the democratic nature of Turkey? Or are you sad that he is still in control and (potentially) centralizing authority around himself? Let me know below

it was a staged coup so that Erdogan would have an excuse to purge the government and military while further islamifying the country

Indeed.
That number was lower because they rushed,unorganized,and didn't get to convince some other key men,some didn't got info,etc.
Point being,stop looking for conspiracy theories everywhere.

Just because the system is democratic doesn't mean that every person voted in by the system is democratic. I think we've seen this quite a few times already. As well I think we've seen that Erdogan wants more power if not total power.

Just like James Donovan, i'm starting to get angry and annoyed by people using incorrect-generally accepted terms.

When I made the poll, I attempted to keep the question objective and unbiased using language for both sides of the argument.

In my personal opinion, I do feel he is an autocrat. Just like Napoleon or Hitler, autocrats can be elected. Erdogan has been able to use the system in a way to centralize power. When he could no longer remain Prime Minister, he ran for President and is attempting to turn Turkey into a Presidential state in order to gain more de jure power (he has de facto power). It looks to me like the secular nature of Turkey's democracy is slowing creeping back and the military, traditionally the "protectors" of Kemalism usually steps in and hands power back to the people (not saying I support military coups, but I do feel the polarization nature of Erdogan's policies justify his removal)

I'm not entirely convinced it was stage. It appeared that they were not getting any traction and with mounting protest surrendered on mass within hours. Erdogan, while neutering the military, has also made powerful friends within the group whose support would have been vital in a coup attempt. Now he has arrested a third of the military's top brass, generals and admirals specifically, who if they were involved would have been able to seize control of the country,

I'm convinced it's staged since here if you commit treason, your fate is instant death and they committed a coup which is counted as treason, so they put their lives on the risk to start it then they just give up easily when all they were faced with were civilians? Hmm definitely does not seem fishy to me, and it couldn't be that they were afraid of killing civies when there was video of a helicopter firing down onto one of the bridges into a crowd of civies.

I think it was staged, because they had several crucial moments where they could have been successful plus the cup wasn't extensively planned, I mean, they focused on Istanbul an Ankara when they could have focused on other cities too to gain traction and 'strenght'.

Besides, they had the bridges locked and they had control for some time, and they didn't even make great effort to seize Erdogan to gain leverage...

Turkey is modern (contemporary) western democracy which mean it have elected parliament and elected president by popular vote (majority of population). Which further mean they (parliament and president) control/lead the country in direction they want by legislation and decree. That power is granted to them by the people. So if President of Turkey shut down tweeter and facebook in the country by presidential decree, that mean it is legit, and no one can oppose that as he did nothing wrong or against the law. He have 5 years term and if people dislike him, they simply wont vote for him on the next elections and that's how it ends.

Only possible way to change president or members of the parliament is elections, that's what democracy says and constitution protects. Any other way is revolution and violantion of political rights.

Next thing is that he cannot centralize power because power in Turkey is already centralized, like in every other non-federation republic, France, Italy, Poland, Denmark. There is no way to 'decentralize' power in a republic, as there are no other governments, parliaments or autonomies inside. There's only one parliament in Ankara, and one government, again, in Ankara. The country is already unitary, which is normal as they are all ethnic Turks, why would they want to decentralize power. (only Serbs and Germans are dumb enough to decentralize in their majority regions)

You say how he change positions from Prime Minister to President, but i tell you that's because people voted him to become president, he just applied for position (candidate on election). If people didn't vote him there is no way he would become the President. Or you want to say he cheated on elections? If that's the case, then that's a crime and should be dealt with, but if not, if everything was legit and according to country laws, that mean he's clean and innocent and simply do what laws granted him.

Germans have a decentralized state and many autonomous governments in regions like Bavaria and others due to history (tradition) related to the German Unification..

You keep following me and correcting... jk i like being corrected because i don't like mistakes.

My bad, Denmark is kingdom, but unitary neverthless, no need for autonomies like 'United Kingdom' of Britain where you have Scots, English, Welsh and Irish.

Point was only multiethnic countries (kind of) have to be federalized and decentralized, so no ethnic group oppress/rule/lead other smaller ethnic group(s). Or large countries like America, they need 50 states to self-govern as they are way too large for one centralized government. Or Russia, have 22 republics and 4 autonomous regions, 3 federal cities. But Russia is both multiethnic and large(largest) country, so definitely needed Federation, but i would not complain if we become unitary republic if everyone pay taxes to Moskva and in return Moskva take care of us by relocating that money to parts of the country where it is needed, like smaller countries are doing (Italy, France, Poland, Turkey).

But because non-Russians won't have autonomy anymore, they should keep recieving funds to maintain their culture, tradition and language.

That was 150 years ago, today World become smaller place, so they can afford to centralize and still function normal.
